    Empathy When Designing for Users Who Want to Cheat You

    User experience designers are trained to develop deep understanding of the people for whom we are designing. We do research, develop personas, even involve users in our design activities. We’re taught to think about users as people just going about their lives; as designers, we’re supposed to help them along their way and, when possible, delight them.

    But what happens when we must account for people with less noble, perhaps even fraudulent, intentions? What are we to make of people who want to break our designs and undermine or businesses? In this session, I’ll talk about ways of designing for (or against) fraudsters without sacrificing empathy.


    Sharon Bautista is a Chicago-based user experience researcher and designer. She is passionate about helping mission-driven organizations leverage human-centered design to realize their missions and increase their impact. Sharon currently works as a UX researcher at Mozilla. Before that, she led UX and strategy teams both agency- and client-side. Sharon also organizes the UX Book Club of Chicago.
